CHAPTER EIGHT

I stayed put for ten seconds before hopping off the infirmary-looking bed and heading to the open drawer. Inside were ocean blue shirts, matching pants, as well as socks and underthings. I selected one of each and went into the bathroom. A quick glance at my haggard reflection, and I decided I did want to shower. When I finished, I dressed and ran a brush through my hair. Dark circles rested under my eyes, making me look tired. Mostly I was sad and felt defeated. There were multiple reasons, but the biggest was Kai. He would never understand me or that the monsters weren't evil, killing machines. At least I was clean and smelled like fresh vanilla with a hint of lemon, thanks to the shampoo and body wash.

As I made my way back into the room, someone knocked once and entered.

"Much better," Colin said, looking me over.

"Shoes?" I asked, lifting one foot.

He squatted and tapped on another part of the wall, and a pair of navy boots appeared from within another hidden drawer.

"Let me guess, these will be my size?" I took them and went over to the only chair. Sat, and put them on. They fit, just as I knew they would.

"Of course. We know everything about you, Harla."

That gave me pause. "Everything?"

He eyed me shrewdly. "We know your blood type, which elements you have an affinity with, that you can communicate with the monsters of the Shade."

Without meaning to, I clamped a hand over my mouth.

"We also know about your family and why you have power over the shadow magic," Colin smirked, resting his hands on his hips. "So, yeah, of course, the boots would fit."

"How?" I finally breathed out, trying to stand. Fear had my knees quaking while a tumble of worries caused my belly to ache.

"Come on. Let me show you around while we talk." He waved me over to the door.

I followed, pretending I didn't know that I was underwater. At my fear, my shadow magic nudged against my chest as though begging to be released. I swallowed down, mentally forcing my magic into submission. It was then I realized how faint the feeling was. Where in the Games, the magic had almost been beyond my control. Now, it was much more contained, probably because of whatever I'd been injected with.

"Why did you call me Umbra?" I asked as I followed him along a small corridor. It was so narrow that Colin's shoulders nearly touched.

Colin didn't stop moving but glanced over his shoulder. "That is what we call those elementals with shadow magic."

"Oh." That was an easy enough explanation. "Are there a lot like me?"

"Not as many as we'd like. As far as we know, there are three. You, a wolf blood and a vampire blood."

"So one each." That couldn't be a coincidence.

"Very perceptive. That's right."

We reached the end of the hallway, and he turned right. I went after him but glanced down the hall to the left. It was eerily dark that way.
